Russia to increase defense spending by 60 percent

Russian defense spending will increase by 60 percent to more than 2 trillion rubles (about 66.3 million U.S. dollars) by 2013, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported Friday.

(Kazan, July 30, Tatar-inform). Russian defense spending will increase by 60 percent to more than 2 trillion rubles (about 66.3 million U.S. dollars) by 2013, Russian business daily Vedomosti reported Friday, said Xihnua.

Russian government made the decision during a meeting on Thursday that the defense spending will go up from 1.264 trillion rubles (about 42 million dollars) to over 2 trillion rubles in 2012.

Navy, aviation and space industries are reported to top the list of priorities in defense spending.

Experts believe the construction of advanced submarines, ballistic missiles, new class frigates and other vessels will demand most part of the funding.

It also includes the construction of two Mistral helicopter carriers under Russian-French joint agreement.

Besides, the country plans to spend 2.65 billion dollars on 60 Su-family fighter jets and buy 26 MiG-29K Fulcrum-D carrier-based fighter jets, with the expected contract of more than 828 million dollars.

Russia also intends to buy 32 SU-34 Flanker fighter-bombers with the cost of some 36.4 million dollars each.
