With this result, Russia ranks among the world’s ten countries with the biggest number of web users.

(Kazan, July 28, Tatar-inform). The number of internet users in Russia is about 60 million, says the Pingdom monitoring firm citing the Internet World Stats.

With this result, Russia is among the world’s ten countries with the biggest numbers of web users, ranking seventh. Most internet users, 420 million, live in China. The US and Japan rank second and third on the list, featuring 234 and 99 million people respectively.

The leaders in internet penetration (ratio between the number of internet users in a country and its population) were the UK and South Korea, 82 and 81 percent respectively. Others on the top five were Germany, the US and Japan. By comparison, the figure for Russia is less than 43 percent.

The global internet audience is nearly two billion. It has since 2000 increased more than five times. The internet penetration is 28.7 percent across the world, meaning every fourth Earth resident has access to the internet.

The data pertaining to the Russian internet is somewhat discrepant with the Russian stats. A Russian company counted as of the end of 2009 32 million active users, Lenta.ru reports.
