UN attaches to people right to drinking water

The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution recognising access to clean drinking water as a human right. “Drinking water is a human right necessary for productive life and exercising all other rights,” the document stresses.Access to clean drinking water and sanitation is now one of the fundamental human rights. The General Assembly has called all the UN member states and international organisations to render financial and technical assistance to poor countries, to help them provide people with clean drinking water and unobstructed access to it.
According to the data cited in the resolution, about 884 million people lack access to safe drinking water, while over 2.6 billion have no access to tap water. About 1.5 million children under 5 die annually due to diseases caused by drinking unsuitable water.
The water resolution was approved by 122 states including Russia, France, Spain and China. 41 countries abstained, including the US and UK.
