Number of broadband internet users in Russia grows one third over year

The number of broadband internet users in Russia has grown from 8.3 to 11.3 million.

(Kazan, March 5, Tatar-inform, Mikhail Mironov). The number of private users of the internet in Russia, who have broadband access, in 2009 increased 36 percent, totalling 11.3 million people, said the ACM Consulting firm in a report.

Moscow remains the leader in terms of high-speed internet users numbers, 2.93 million, followed by Saint-Petersburg, with 1.05 million subscribers.

The largest broadband internet operator in Russia has been Comstar, with 1.2 million subscribers. The runner up is Tsentrtelecom, with 1.13 million users.

The Vimpelcom and Ertelecom federal operators present in Tatarstan have been placed third and fourth in the ranking, with 1 million and 958 thousand subscribers respectively. Ertelecom had an impressive gain in the subscriber base, accounting for 18 percent of the 3 million new subscribers in Russia in 2009.
