Hillary Clinton is visiting Kazan on the second day of her official trip to Russia.
(Kazan, October 14, Tatar-inform, Mikhail Mironov). The United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in Kazan today. She was welcomed by the Republic of Tatarstan President Mintimer Shaimiev, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Culture Zilya Valeeva, and Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin at the international airport “Kazan”.A group of American journalists have arrived in Kazan with Hillary Clinton. She is expected to give interviews to BBC and CNN TV-channels at the airport and then head to Kazan Kremlin.
Mintimer Shaimiev and Hillary Clinton will hold bilateral talks in Kazan. Issues of economic cooperation between the US and Tatarstan will be discussed. Also US Secretary of State is going to visit Kazan State University and talk to its students and faculty.
The US State Department explained the choice of Kazan as the last destination of her European tour by the fact that this city has experience in “tolerance consolidation”. Kazan “really shows that the Russian Federation is a multiethnic country made up of many constituent parts and has many different ethnic groups and faiths represented,” State Department spokesman Ian Kelly explained before the tour. “To really understand a country, you have to get outside of the capital. And I think that's particularly true with Russia, to be able to see something besides the area inside the Ring Road,” he said.
As a part of her visit to Russia, Hillary Clinton has already held important talks with Russia President Dmitry Medvedev and her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. The sides stated that cooperation of Russia and the US is reaching a new level.
